Cockroaches, leaks, A/C unit broke twice, charged unfairly upon move-out. - Cockroaches: When we first moved in, there was a cockroach infestation in our unit and a cockroach fell on my husband while he was in the shower. Maintenance had pest control come when they were available and taped off the areas we knew the cockroaches were coming from. The tape job was pretty ugly and remained while we lived there. We were told at the time that we live close to the beach, so it's not unexpected to have cockroaches. For the price we were paying and because we've lived in NYC without having a cockroach problem, we were shocked to hear that. We weren't offered any compensation or anything beyond tape and pest control. - Leaks: Multiple leaks during our time there. Handled promptly to the building's credit, but still an inconvenience and sign of an older building. - A/C unit broke/leaked: Twice. Both times I needed to move all of my clothes out of the closet while they fixed everything. The second time, it flooded my closet and I had to file an insurance claim for my ruined clothes which has been a major headache. - Charged unfairly upon move-out: Expect over $300 for painting charges upon move out. Before anyone even took a look at our apartment, we were told they standardly charge for painting. We've never been charged for repainting in the past - this cost has always been covered by landlords. We specifically asked and were told our patch work to close the holes that hung 2 TVs was acceptable, but were told after the fact (and after we could do anything about it) that it was unacceptable. We were told there was nothing out of the ordinary at our move-out inspection, but when we disputed the paint charges they changed the story and said the patch work and marks on the walls were unacceptable. We could have easily rectified any of that if they had told us that at the move-out inspection, but instead they said everything was fine, and told us something completely different after the fact - after we could do something about it.
