I've lived at the Palazzo East for over a year now, and boy let me tell you about some of the experiences I have had. First of all, most of the management is a joke and thinks their time is more precious than their residents. I had a professional musician/piano teacher move into the unit above mine. He moved in with a piano and other musician instruments which he likes to play throughout the day, sometimes for hours. I could hear EVERYTHING, every note, every scale, and it was loud enough where I wouldn't even be able to hear my television when he was playing full force. I'm a law student and having a piano player live above me is incredibly disruptive. It is also arguably in violation of my implied warranty of habitability, covenant of quiet enjoyment, etc promised to me by CA Law. I tried to communicate with the management several times, and for the first month of so they did absolutely nothing about it. I finally went to the manager and politely explained the urgency of my situation. I gave him over a week to speak to his legal department and of course he never got back to me, and then proceeded to ignore my phone calls for 5 days when I tried to contact him over two weeks later. I had to ask my lawyer to call and help me handle the situation. Long story short, the Palazzo was hardly sympathetic of my concerns, were quite dismissive of my needs, and resolved the problem by telling me I could move (they didn't pay any of the costs other than waiving a $600 transfer fee, which is ridiculous money making ploy to begin with). They also raised my rent by $70 in the new unit I picked out (which is essentially the same unit I had before, just in a different location). They were even unwilling to help me lower my rent in my new unit a bit or cover any overlap costs that resulted from me being forced to lease my unit a week earlier than my move out day. I understand this may have been a legal gray area for them and they felt they weren't required to do anything, but when you pay excessive amounts for rent, you expect a sympathetic, professional, and responsive management that works with both parties to come to a fair resolution. I guess that's too much to ask for here. The Palazzo never fails to remind you how they're trying to cheapen your experience day by day and squeeze every single last dime out of your wallet if they can. To the Palazzo, it's quite clear that they don't think of you as residents/customers they value, but instead see you as nothing but giant wallets they're trying to squeeze money out of day and night. I understand most businesses feel this way, but at least they pretend to care about your needs. For example, Palazzo used to have wonderful amenities and services, but those long gone. The days of water and fresh fruit in the spa, towels and snacks at the pool, and a water boy service at the pool are long gone. They're slowly cutting amenities that are basic and of little cost to them such as providing a water dispenser and plastic cups in the spa. However, instead they've decided to invest in making the front desk of the spa a retail haven. They sell bikinis, chapstick, thongs, nail polish etc near the front desk which they try and sell to the residents. Residents live at the Palazzo and pay inflated prices for rent because they want superior service, NOT because they want to be a tacky leopard print bikini at the front desk. Instead of fronting money to purchase unnecessary knicknacks that no one buys, spend that money to keep residents happy so they'll renew their leases! OH YES, and let's not forget the class action lawsuit the residents filed against the palazzo because the Palazzo failed to pay their water bill on time and got excessive overage fees. Instead of handling the issue themselves, they quietly charged each resident more to cover the late fees. AY yi yi yi. You may be wondering why I still live here. It's honestly just because I'm too busy to move, the Palazzo is pretty close to where I go to school, and I'm also currently looking into purchasing my own place. I decided I'd rather spend my energy working with a realtor than wasting my time finding a new apartment for rent. As much of a dump as this place is, I'm putting up with it solely for my own convenience for the time being.
