Exercise extreme caution when considering properties listed by the horrible company “AIR Communities” on rental platforms. While their promotional visuals might appear enticing, prospective tenants should be forewarned of a multitude of hidden fees. Beyond the baseline rent, there are significant charges for amenities such as parking, water, and mail services, which often require an additional subscription. The following are crucial observations derived from reviews by past tenants across multiple platforms. It is imperative that you review these insights meticulously to avoid potential regrettable experiences.
Here is 15 reasons why you SHOULD NOT! consider moving into Island Club Apartments:

Reviews for Vaughan Place
I was a co-signer on my son's unit at Vaughan Place- the management here is incredible unprofessional. While the area was nice, he faced nothing but issues due to negligent management. Specifically, mold growing in the walls & a wet and rotting wall which management and maintenance failed to address over the span of six months of maintenance requests. When we raised the issue with management, we were gaslight and told that we could have chose a more expensive unit to avoid such issues, that the maintenance delays were due to weather and other delays -- management never once communicated with my son about such maintenance delays, nor was any proper mold testing completed in the unit. Even if there was no mold in the unit, it's absurd to insinuate that the wall can remain wet and rotting due to choosing a "cheaper " unit (nearly $2700). Very unprofessional management- hopefully they treat future residents with a higher level of respect and decency. Live elsewhere.
I've been here for 6 months. Fabulous apartment in terms of granite countertops, soundproofing, good location. Work orders have been completed promptly. Shuttle to metro is always on schedule. However, my bicycle was stolen from inside the camera monitored bike cage, in which it was locked properly and securely. Secondly, packages are never delivered on time. I had an important one delivered via UPS but it took them 2 days to find it to give to me. Then the power has gone out twice in two months. There aren't any guidelines on smoking, so now with warmer weather my downstairs neighbor's second hand smoke wafts in my window. Considering I'm paying for a luxury apartment, I expect to be getting luxury service.
DISASTER. I've lived in apartment buildings in NYC and DC since 1999 and never missed rent and I'm quiet and have always had wonderful things to say about nearly every location. HOWEVER this establishment has mismanaged my lease from the first day on to the last. They are lucky the front desk pulls the weight of the good reviews because the folks in the leasing office from management to even the leasing agents are sneaky, unresponsive and honestly even disrespectful once you're a tenant. I've never seen such top down management issues that directly translate into problems with lower level leasing agents. Day 1 apartment not cleaned and the carpet cleaning company finally shows the day after move in and I was given the wrong keys and told to park in the office parking lot while the find time to issue me a spot permanent. That parking permit location was never issued throughout months of my entire lease. Rent was but calculated accurately and I had to call in multiple times to get that adjusted. The grand finale was my move out. I was told in writing that if I left early I would be forgiven the 2 month rent penalty IF they found an immediate occupancy after the end of my move out date which is a huge financial gift. With that in mind I moved out, they had a new tenant moving right in and then they said "we never wrote that or said that" and stuck me with a mega payment for two months. Management won't respond to my letters calling them out and I'm left in the dark. On top of that I get calls for apartment problems after not even living there for months. This is a Top down management and failure to train employees that will ultimately land them the worst review I've ever written. I hope the Vaughan Place feels how they treated me was worth it with this 1 star review. Rent is cheap but I'd pay more across the street in a second if I knew. Good luck.
Do not live here! The workers have no problem harassing residents and the management refuses to hold them accountable. There is a huge pest issue and you can hear them in the walls at night. The building smells awful and the attempts to mask the smell through excessive scent sprays are disgusting. The amenities are decent but are not maintained well at all. Maintenance will simply walk into your apartment unannounced as they please and will leave a mess. There have been some great concierge people here but the turnover is so high, those who replace them are horrible and unprofessional. The package system is atrocious and you will likely lose a few packages with no remorse or help from the awful management here. The elevators have been broken for months and I have seen people get stuck in the elevators for hours. Workers will open your packages and steal from you! Vaughan Place is the only apartment building that makes you pay extra money to get your own mail and packages. Do not live here! Jay and Michaela can't do their basic jobs and they will try to scam you.
The leasing office is terrible. They don't update each other on when one left off while work g with tenant. They don't have fixed office times. Take a long lunch break. Close the lights off - They made me wait fir an hour and said that they needed an extended lunch The apartments are old and not as good as what they look from outside. Would suggest you look for other places if you have time.
I'm a current resident and have lived here for 11 months. When everything is working, this is a fine place to live. God help you if you need any kind of maintenance - or are trying to pick up a package when Aaron isn't there. Aaron is great. Repair and maintenance requests often take 7 to 10 days to process and complete. We've had situations in the past where maintenance has said they've completed repairs, but we'd been home all day and knew that wasn't true. Unfortunately, in the 11 months we've lived here, we've needed a lot of repairs. So we've spent a lot of time without working toilets, sinks, washers, dryers and air conditioning - in addition to the ant and pest problems that seem to plague several of the units. Our HVAC unit has been blowing hot air (even when we turn it off) into our unit for 10 days. Temperatures climbed into the 90s outside last week, which means it was even hotter inside with our heat permanently turned on. We were forced to leave. We've been told repeatedly maintenance workers are on their way, but they never show up. We're not sure when we can get back home. The maintenance workers and most of the front desk employees are genuinely pleasant people. The issue seems to be with management, who is difficult to get ahold of and is seldom responsive to residents. If you choose to move here, I would try to confirm with management that necessary repairs have been completed prior to your move. It was very clear to us very early, as things started to break, that a proper inspection hadn't been completed. Don't expect much response from management once you've moved in here, so ask as many questions as you can while they're responsive to you and before you give them your deposit.
Have lived here for over a year. Terrible amenities, the management company is terrible and could care less about the building, and the staff that works here doesn't care about customer service and most of the time they seem annoyed to help you. It's a good location but overall not worth the disadvantages
I have not had a stove/ oven for almost a week now meaning I cannot cook my own food in quarantine. The office has been unresponsive to calls, leasing email has been unresponsive as well. The front desk told us we were going to be seen last Friday by maintenance and it's been 4 days, no maintenance worker has shown up or been in contact. Within a month of moving in our microwave sparked and it took a month for someone to come in and look at it and that was only when I forced them to look at it when they came to respond to our maintenance request about no water coming to our sink. This has been a very disappointing experience and our apartment is very expensive. We have been understanding about the parameters in place during Covid but not being able to make your own meals during a pandemic when you are required to be at home is absolutely unacceptable.
Absolutely atrocious apartment complex with the worst organization and management I have ever witnessed. I've had over one thousand dollars of packages gone missing from concierge (one of which took 6 MONTHS to get reimbursed). I went without a washer and dryer for over a month! I've had maintenance straight up lie about repairing broken things. My AC broke three times over the summer - and once, it took over a week for someone to even look at it, and another week to be fixed! Anytime you need to speak to management, they will say what you want to hear, then never get back to you. Took me 3 weeks to get an email back in regards to negotiating my lease, but now I'm over it and am moving. Do yourself a favor and stay away!
I would give this place 0 stars if that was an option. I completely agree with the other comments posted below with regards to the property mangers. Take your business somewhere else to someone who will appreciate it more! It has become so bad I'm filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. I have lived at Vaughn Place for almost 3 years. The first year was amazing. However, when the apartment complex got new management it went downhill from there. Last summer they decided to add "gates" at the community for "safety" reasons because people were parking on the grounds without permission. Maybe the gates were good in concept but there has been VERY POOR EXECUTION! In installing the gates they also raised the price of parking for resident, WITH NO NOTICE, and started charging for guest passes all in the name of safety. WORSE OF ALL, last week when a trash pin caught on FIRE, the FIRE TRUCK COULD NOT GET IN though the gates because NO ONE answered the "buzzer." ... some protection those things are. The package notification system is by far the worst concept that has ever been put together. For the last nine months I have only received prompt and timely notification of 1 package, out of the approximately 30 I've had delivered. They have literally told me on numerous occasions that they didn't have a package for me, despite the fact that I had received delivery conformation from UPS, USPS, Fed Ex etc... Think of how embarrassing it is to have a friend send you a late gift for your birthday and then call you a month later only to ask why you've never said thank you. The final straw was when I received a surprise package of perishable food that clearly indicated there was perishable food inside on JUNE 20TH, and I was NOT NOTIFIED UNTIL JULY 3RD!!!!! Let's see if they will replace the package I received almost 2 weeks late that is no long good. To make matters worse the management has been overall non responsive to these issues. As a result of their utter lack of care and respect for their residents I would NOT recommend this place even to my dog. DON'T LIVE HERE!!!! I was interested in renting here but given the difficulty I've had just making an appointment, I think I'll pass. I called to schedule and was told a leasing agent would get back to me. That was two weeks ago. Because I was in town, i thought I'd call to see if I could come over. Twice someone clearly picked up the phone and then hung up. Next!
I've never wrote a review but living here is so bad I have to write one. I've lived here for the past year and a half and do not recommend here at all. From all the places I've lived in the past 6 years (about 5 places) in DC this is 100% without a doubt the worst one. Even the discussion board where tenants can post to each other if we're selling things, issues etc all of a sudden recently has been changed to where posts have to be "approved" by management cause it was full of us tenants posting how we're tired of the MANY issues here and want change and posts haven't even been approved since August 3rd so they've left us with no way to communicate to each other. Rodents, Rats, Ants, lost packages with no refunds, very awful gym/weight room that they claim is "state of the art" with lost weights and many many many more issues. Regarding the rats, all they do is bring some guy to your apartment and all he does is just put a couple little pieces of rat poison which does nothing and they don't address the actual issue of just putting pesticide around the apartment building. I don't need a "response from owner" I'm just recommending ANYONE that considers living here, do yourself a huge favor and DON'T. Trust me, you'll regret it like I do.
This place is the worst APT in the world, SAVE UR MONEY. My apartment had broken appliances from the first day I moved in, one of those appliances was the microwave oven, which the property manager refused to change. After about 5 mths of use it finally stopped working.. We placed a call to maintenance for repair and the property manager asked them not to do anything about it... SAVE UR MONEY !!
I have been pet sitting here for years. I have never had an issue with reception until I met the NEW concierge Mercedes . I can admit I was a little annoyed after sitting at the gate for 20 min BUT that's no reason you should ever bad mouth a client, resident , customer out loud at work . I literally heard her talking about me as I got off the elevator. Super rude and nasty . Made you guys look bad
If you're a smoker, you'll love it! You will save so much $$ on cigarettes, because your apartment will fill up with smoke from tobacco that your neighbors have already paid for! You heard right, folks. They spend the money, but YOU still get to smell the smoke for free, because it comes into your apartment through your window. Day, night. Any time! Of course, if you aren't a smoker, you might not enjoy that. But who cares? This is a building for SMOKERS ONLY.
Extremely disappointed and dissatisfied with Vaughan Place. Moved from NJ to DC in August 2021 and noticed the first red flag when at move-in, I could not get my wireless router because the desk staff was overwhelmed with packages (all the while I could see the router behind the desk). This continued to happen through my lease with the high turnover rate of staff and inefficiency of handling packages. I also had many packages lost/was notified of other packages that weren't mine because the staff did not want to check the name/apartment number to ensure packages were being delivered to the right place. Second red flag - no one could get into the parking lot because concierge never opened the gate for guests/Ubers/etc. so I had to always go out and let them in and let them out. Third red flag - work orders that were submitted had instructions/specific requests to follow and they were overlooked or ignored. Fourth red flag - new management company came in around October 2021 and wanted to increase my rent on a one bed, one bath at lease renewal by more than 20% and with no solid justification. Sorry, this place was NOT worth a rent hike by that much, particularly with the mismanagement of the property. Additionally, when asked to have someone from management adjust the increase to potentially keep me as a tenant, I was promised a call back and guidance and never heard back. Fifth red flag - the gym was advertised as having "state of the art equipment"....so why was almost every machine broken? Final red flag - when I thankfully moved out in February 2022, I cleaned the apartment and made sure everything was ready to go for the next tenant. Sadly, I was charged $150 for a cleaning fee because "regardless if you cleaned it, a professional, outside company has to come in and clean it." There was no transparency in this and whether or not this was an option to utilize, otherwise I wouldn't have cleaned the apartment. Overall, if I could do this all again, knowing what I know now, I would NEVER move to Vaughan Place...and glad I left when I did!
Alrighty, if you have read my other posts you will already know of my displeasure with this company, but what they did this morning is the icing on the cake! I was speaking with a good friend of mine in the building here and it seems that the accounting practices of this company are less than stellar, as are their communication skills. This person was summoned to COURT because they are telling this person that they are owed rent which has not been paid. There was NO previous communication from the management office.... NOTHING. And it came in the MAIL. Which is NOT VAID BY DC LAWS. The summons must be delivered BY HAND to the tenant, it can't even be sent by certified mail. So.... the attorney Vaughan Place, LLC has on retainer is quite nice, but because they have not provided him with any documentation to those tenants who end up in court, every case is extended. This resident has not been given a signed/countersigned lease in over 2 years and the management company, Capital Properties has not given this person any chance to try and make this right.... be warned and stay away!
This is not the place you want to be. One of my neighbors had his ceiling cave him from water damage. A young kid who works hard, paid his rent on time, and liked by everyone. Everything in his apartment was destroyed from the water damage. His sofa, bed, all of his belongings. For two weeks, Vaughn Place said they were going to fix his ceiling. Nobody came until he gave notice, and they realized they needed to fix things to get a new tenant. Add to that the loud construction work that us, the rest of his neighbors, then had to listen to. Other people who live here have moved because of the paper thin walls and shoddy construction, which makes this place very difficult to live if you are someone who values their sleep and tranquility. Best advice: Don't even think of renting here. And one last thing: There are some positive reviews up here, but they all seem to be written by the same person or all with a similar style of writing-- and written from places miles away from the apartment themselves-- lending a reasonable person to believe that they have been written by a Vaughn place employee.
I signed a two year lease and have absolutely hated living here. I have been dealing with pest issues since I moved in - mice, cockroaches and ants. I come across about 5 cockroaches a day and the mice come out from behind the kitchen appliances. It's so unsanitary and it terrorizes my dog. I have lived in numerous cities and apartments and have never had an experience like this, and this is by far the most expensive place I've lived. I read similar reviews before moving in but felt like those reviews were common everywhere so ignored them. DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE. The neighborhood is nice but save your money and live somewhere better.
Rent raised by 20% after one year. Continuous AC problems. Bad renovation, corners cut everywhere.
I lived here for two years and made every single payment on time. When I moved out, the several hundred dollars in my account was never refunded to me. Many phone calls and emails over the course of over three months were ignored. Per DC law, I should have received a check within 45 days, but it has now been over three months with no email or phone call from anyone. Nichole is impossible to get ahold of and does not answer emails. Maybe it's the constant management turnover, or maybe it's just negligence, but either way, don't expect to get your deposit back. The number they're giving in their response to negative reviews is the same front desk number I've been calling for months. The receptionist answers, and nobody else is ever in the office to answer questions or help with this issue (or several others I had during my time living there).
Leasing office staff have been ignoring multiple request to communicate regarding a rent over payment. Vaughan Place has a significant amount of our money and is giving us the run around. Lease is over, apartment, vacated and clean. If rent was late, they had no problem charging late fees, but now when the shoe is on the other foot, they are ignoring calls and emails and pushing us off. They owe us a month's rent! Nicole is horrible to work with and is giving us the run around. This is completely unacceptable. Rent somewhere else! DC is a big city with plenty of other options.
We lived in Vaughan Place for about 6 years. Always paid rent on time. We moved out this March. Has been roughly three months since. We still have not received rent refund from Vaughan Place. We reached out numerous times. There are no responses in the last three attempts. We understand that there would be delay due to COVID-19. However, no reply to emails on multiple accounts is not acceptable. Plus, we deserved to know when the refund check will arrive. I would not recommend Vaughan Place for the poor management.
This place is disgusting. After living here for over two years, I am so glad I got out. STAY AWAY. The staff is incredibly rude. They have people at the entrance who will stare at you blankly when you say hello. If you go down for a simple request (for example, asking the shuttle schedule) they react as if you have bothered them. And their package service? It is a DISASTER. I do not understand how a "luxury" condominium could have such terrible package management. If you order rush shipping, for example, and pay extra to receive your important package the next day - be prepared to wait another day just to have the package sorted by Vaughan Place. You will receive the packaged arrived notification from, say UPS, and wait 6-8 hours to go down and ask for a package you know arrived, only to learn it still has not been sorted and be told not to bother them until you receive a confirmation email from Vaughan Place. It is incomprehensible that a condominium can have a package system as poor is this and not care one bit. Oh, and I have seen people step in dog poo and walk down the hall, and it won't be cleaned up for two weeks. All the management cares about is how the lobby looks, how to get new people to sign. I have lived in 4 complexes in DC now, and Vaughan Place was BY FAR the WORST. Leaving was the best decision I ever made.
Update: This is in response to the comment made by Management. Virtually none of our concerns were adequately addressed except for the cracked ceiling. We did not decide to stay here willingly. We would have left but the costs of breaking our lease would have been exorbitant. Had it been up to us we would have left already without thinking twice.
Management is horrible. We are owed quite a bit of money and are being given the run around. Nicole in the leasing office is ignoring our calls and emails. Dishonest & rude. Renters beware! Rent somewhere else! DC has plenty of other apartments buildings that won't rob you Interesting that NOW you are willing to help once we put up bad reviews. Up until now, you've been ignoring our calls to the very number you wrote in your response. We'll call, maybe now you will actually get us our money back! STILL NO RESPONSE from Vaughn Place, except here on Yelp! Nichole is never there when we call, or she is "on a tour". The desk people just give you the run around when you ask to talk to someone else in charge then! STAY AWAY from this community, they will rob you. Filed complaint with BBB.
The apartments themselves are beautiful, and you want to rent right after you find the place. There is a Giant, CVS, and four or five high quality restaurants within walking distance. Wisconsin Ave. is right there, so you are close to bus lines and the Metro. What nobody will tell you is that the construction of the buildings and units away from the main building is seriously shoddy. Paper thin walls. Be prepared for noise! And many of the people who rent here are college students or just out of college, so prepare for a neighbor or two who parties and with the thin walls-- being kept up to 3AM in the morning, or later, depending on when they will allow you to get to sleep or tire themselves out and want to sleep themselves. And don't expect the management to do much of anything. I complained and was told simply that I should not expect to be free from any noise whatsoever. That was hardly what either I or my other quiet-seeking neighbors have ever asked for. We just want what is considered normal when it comes to noise. My noisy neighbor lives above me. As it turns out, his NEXT DOOR neighbor is moving to get away from the noise. And when I talked to management, they told me that there had been two previous complaints against the same neighbor that was causing others and me to complain and move out. Management did absolutely nothing for any of us. If you are quiet and work hard at your job and add to your community, this is NOT the complex for you. If you are just out of college, work in some marginal job, party all the time, make a lot of noise, and have little regard for anyone but yourself, check out Vaughn Place right away! They will expedite your application and waive a fee or two.
One of the more awful places I've lived, and twice the price. They insist on bringing out 4 large garbage bins every single morning between 8 and 8:30 with an insane amount of noise and clanging, even after I asked them nicely not to roughly 12 times, and after noting that the garbage doesn't come until around noon. Came into my apartment multiple times without my permission. Front desk people are great though.
I bought the house from the previous tenant house was completely neglected and the rink never said anything 3 months after moving home water came from under the carpet in the bedroom the dirty water came from the whole house did not find the solution and all the smell spread to home for 1 week that nasty bad smell and my children had to take after they came to wash the carpet, but the smell still did not go wanted to get out of the house I wanted to change the house for 2 months, I said they wanted to change the house and they said no, they asked for a high price to the house I did not answer all the management of the dishwasher washing machine oven dishwasher does not work properly and 6 months passed
Save yourself a headache and the disgusting drainage and water problems. There are roaches and rats everywhere and there's a possible disease issue and when you complain, the staff blames the tenants for their poor dumpster placement and maintenance. The reception people are very nice but management doesn't communicate with anyone so they can't do their jobs as well as they could. Maintenance is awful, tasks are left incomplete, or half way done then never return. Maintenance or lack thereof violate various building and health codes. We saw one of our neighbors had to putting out a fire where the a/c units are right outside. After signing a lease, we were warned by Mona not to drink the water, and she was right. The water in the building is undrinkable and is frequently shut off and always has a strong smell. They advertise all units having a fireplace, but they are not usable for heat, so during the winter, a thermostat set at 69/70 is roughly 200 a month., Management only responds to reviews here, but when you call, they don't call back, address the issue nor communicate with tenant. They call this a luxury apartment, which leads me to believe that D.C. has the lowest standards in the country. Vaughan Place is not only gross, but violates the general codes that are in place for safety. Try Mclean Gardens across the street, it seems better maintained and the residents seem happier
Don't waste your money. I'll just share the review they asked me for after my last request for service. Terrible management overall. My review is not for the technician but for AIR "communities". In fact, as this building has a history of mismanagement, discrimination, and outward hostility towards residents I have little doubt maintenance was more than likely told told specifically to not replace appliances in our unit. Meanwhile, unsafe and apparently non permitted construction suddenly takes over the public areas of the building with no warning, elevators and parking areas only half work, side entrances are left open for anyone to wander into the building with no security protocols whatsoever, etc, etc. My only real service request now is will you let us out of our lease without penalty to exploit someone else? You make money off of us yet provide nothing you advertise in return. Much better communities at better rates just blocks away. EDIT- This Susan person that answers reviews does not actually live or work here, unless they hide somewhere on sight and never email or speak to residents? I've never seen or met them and have lived here for 5 years. If they were indeed here, it'd be pretty easy to figure out who I am. Further, this type of uncaring, overtly untruthful response is exactly what I'd expect from this company. AIR Communities is the epitome of the unscrupulous investment/development groups that plague the DC housing market.
Bias, and VERY discriminative. They pick and choose who they accept. I truly believe they only want a certain demographic in their properties. They lie and contradict their reasons for not accepting an applicant. You can do better.... I did.
For objectivity & not included are multiple attempts to get correct pricing and consistent information from the office 3/25 Good afternoon! We would now like to move forward with a full application and deposit refund. Please let me know what we need to do to get that completed, preferable today (Monday). Thank you so much! Meg 3/25 Hi Meghan, Thank you for your email. I'm sorry to hear that you wish to cancel your application. I can process your refund today but it would only be in the amount of $450.00. The application fee is non-refundable. Please confirm that you wish to cancel your application at our community 3/25 Nichole, Unfortunately, we are sorry as well. This was not our ideal but as it stands, we cannot get anything consistent from your office. Thus, we are left with nothing more to do than move forward elsewhere. I am happy to speak with your supervisor - this was not due to a simple change of mind, but instead inefficient processes, conflicting information, and an overall inconvenience leading me to continually contact the office for a lease. The hardest money we ever intended to spend. Please process the full refund to include the application fee (there are extenuating circumstances and I would include this as one since the error was not on our end). I am very happy to talk with you, corporate, or the individual of your preference as this was not merely a mind change as noted above. I am happy to elaborate on my concerns as it relates to the 1. Overall process, 2. Inconsistent communication from multiple parties 3. The delay and 4. How a company might consider various customer service improvements. I thank you for your time and look forward to seeing the full refund amount ($500.00) and/or, I am happy to speak with another individual. Thank you so much! 3/27 Dear Nichole, I have not yet heard back regarding the below or received a call from anyone at the office. This is a friendly follow-up to again revisit. Please let me know when the $500 refund will be initiated (if that happened already I will keep an eye out for the refund post). Alternatively, please let me know who I should speak with to close this matter. Meg 3/29 Hello Nichole, This marks my third follow-up. Please advise when that refund will post. Or, when I might expect to hear from someone regarding the matter. It seems the next in line is the Community Manager. I look forward to a response. Meg Hi Meghan, Thank you for your email. I am little surprised by the tone of your email. Our office has gone above and beyond to assist you with your short term rental needs. I was in meetings yesterday which prevented me from following up with you. Normally our application fee is non-refundable. But after discussing your situation with my manager, she has agreed to refund your entire payment in the amount of $500.00. The refund was submitted to the accountant for processing on Wednesday. You should expect the refund to be credited to your account within 5-7 business days. Please let me know if we are able to assist you further. Have a wonderful weekend. Hi Nichole, I thank you for your response. As you know, the interpretation of tone is subjective - my correspondence is nothing other than a third attempt to close out business with you directly. In fact, I/we have been extremely patient and with that, I will address your notation of "above and beyond" for your internal records. My wife (cc'd) was with me during the initial visit and present on all phone calls. I do regret that we saw the exact opposite - conflicting information, misinformation, unprocessable applications, no lease to even review, and my continuous need to follow-up for any type of response. Thus, the former led me to pursue and secure a short-term lease at another property (that took two days). We are thrilled with the proactive service there, and it is a much better fit for all. We will look for the refund to be posted in the full amount, this email is simply for your records, and I will gladly complete an online review. Likewise - I wish you all a wonderful weekend
Avoid this place. Terrible management, very disorganized in the mail room (lost numerous packages of ours) trash always overflowing in the dumpster area (have seen rats), gym has not been cleaned/maintained at all since we moved in 6 months ago, terrible job with the recent snow storm (my husband did more shoveling of the sidewalks than the property did) numerous better options in the area
Unfortunately, the property managers are completely unresponsive and blatantly uncaring. They're nice to your face a time or two but in the +5 months I've lived here I've had several experiences where I've needed their guidance or help in some way and absolutely nothing has been done. Due to their negligence I did not receive mail for the first 5 months of living here. The property is beautiful, the units are great, and the neighbors are lovely, but the management is downright disgraceful. It'd be better to be an owner here and not have to go through them to get anything taken care of. It's a bummer.
I never write reviews, but I have to warn those who are considering living here, because it's not the luxury it claims to be. 1. There are rats. You can smell them in the lobby, and hear the scurrying in the ceiling. 2. We had a large leak into our apartment from a pipe explosion above, and it was very much unlivable for a month. We had no hotel compensation, and had to beg for them to give us a month compensation on rent. The situation was handled incredibly poorly, the leasing office did not do anything to make the situation better nor seem to care. 3. During this leak, Trusew entered our apartment without our permission. We were not home at the time, and never consented to workers and apartment staff entering without someone home. He touched and moved around my roommates stuff, and we still do not know why that occurred to this day. As three college students (women) sharing this apartment, we no longer felt secure in Vaughan place. As stated, we never gave consent to have anyone from the building enter our place without us home. This was violated, and when we confronted Trusew, he denied the situation, and said he had spoken to one of us, but "couldn't remember who". This was extremely disturbing and unprofessional. 4. The gym always has broken equipment. 5. The pool is never open because the new company will not find a lifeguard. 6. Our toilet, washing machine, and freezer were broken almost the entire year here. We constantly had to have maintenance come, and it was clear when we moved in they did not do appliance checks as they claim. 7. Maintenance never comes when you want them to. They come when they please. This makes getting things fixed extremely difficult. 8. For most of the year, we had our upstairs neighbor doing construction, and the banging could always be heard above us, and often woke us up and caused disturbances. This is just a short list of the issues we have had this year at Vaughan Place, and the end as the lease is almost up.
Save yourself, do not move in to this terrible building! We have lived here for almost 2 years and loved the first 18 months. Not sure what has happened but it now feels like living in a disgusting college dorm. Trash lines the hallways when the lazier tenants don't feel like making the 100 foot walk to the trash chute. Though, even if trash makes it to the chute, it doesn't always get into the trash bin; most mornings you can count on having to step over bags of trash (and even a blood-soaked pillow one lucky morning!) to get your own bag down the chute. Everybody smokes in their apartments and the food and trash smells have led to a worsening roach problem. Stay away!!!! We are locked into a lease and it feels like prison!!
PAY MORE, GET LESS! This should be the official motto for Washington, D.C.'s Vaughan Place and owner AIR Communities, where: *rent keeps going up, up, up *services keep going down, down, down Live here knowing the frustrations will begin the second you need anything, ever. Will you ever get the package you ordered? Maybe, maybe not...and don't count on anyone who works here caring. Per my fellow residents (because good luck getting ahold of management), Vaughan Place has outsourced its package "service" - so instead of helping you find the package they lost, they'll hand you contact info for an outside company and tell you to figure it out on your own. Need help with something else? Too bad. The people who work the front desk (with one exception) Just. Don't. Care. Or they're temps, and no one bothered to tell them where anything is. Get used to hearing "sorry, I don't know." Or, "try coming back tomorrow" (so it's someone else's problem). Particularly annoying is non-access to the fitness room; this amenity may be included as part of the steep price of living at Vaughan Place, but you probably won't be able to use it. Why? Because you need a special fob, which is fine, except that nobody at the front/concierge desk (which is actually in charge of the fobs) knows where they are, and there's no one they can ask. Sometimes, when they really dig, they'll finally find a fob but - guess what? It doesn't work. (Granted, I only tried five or six times; maybe the seventh would've been a charm.) These are just a few examples. Come live here and find out the meaning of utter and complete incompetence for yourself. An exception to the almost non-existent management and poor service: the maintenance staff, which seems to be doing its best under remarkably shoddy management. Pity. Vaughan Place had some issues before "AIR Communities" took over, but this level of apathy is absurd. And no excuses for new management "getting the kinks out" - unless the allotted "grace period" is forever. Come to think of it, the name of the new management/owner - "AIR Communities" - is incredibly self-descriptive: Any help or assistance you need is...like air. Invisible.
Pros: Great location, front desk staff is friendly, Aaron in the mail room is great Cons: There were dead roaches/rat poop all over when I moved in (apartment hadn't been cleaned), and I wasn't given a back door key or a parking fob. Some of the leasing staff is rude and extremely unhelpful. I wasn't going to leave a review at all, but after I moved out, a package of mine accidentally got sent there. I have called four times and they still have not returned it to sender like they said they would.
100% do not recommend living here. Some of these reviews are clearly paid for... just look at their Yelp reviews and it'll tell you all you need to know. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere.
As most of the reviews mention, management is HORRIBLE!! There is ZERO communication with residents. They do not reply to any emails or call back when leaving a message. We were told the pool would be opening Memorial Day weekend. Well it has been two weekends past and the pool is not open, there has been NO communication. We have sent 4+ emails with no response. Meanwhile it is very hot out and the neighboring apartment community is enjoying their pool. A few months back they said it was required to have the fireplaces in the units tested. A massive hole was cut into our wall, which then required us to schedule repairs separately, our apartment was full of smoke, and it was a huge disruption to our day. We were not told at all what this would entail. We were supposed to receive a certification from this test and whether or not the fireplace would be able to be used within 2 weeks after the test. It is now 3 months with no certification and no response from management after several emails and calls. They just do their own thing going against CDC guidelines during the pandemic. Requiring workers to enter your apartment for various things such as the smoke test, evaluations, audits etc. They limited when packages could be picked up in the middle of the pandemic making it so large groups of people would be gathered in the lobby waiting for packages because they only allowed package pickup at the most inconvenient times. Does it make sense to not let people pick up packages between 12-1pm (when people may be on lunch break), or from 5-7pm (when people are coming home from work passing by the mail room)? The list goes on and I could give many more examples. It is really too bad because the neighborhood and location is great, but the management is just incompetent and they don't care about the residents.
Stay as far away as possible. Vaughan Place is the absolute definition of superficial features with no substance. The maintenance staff, front desk staff, and concierge staff are surly and rude - as if you asking to pick up a package or bothering them with a question is some sort of an imposition. The leasing office is pretty much non-existent - they keep a skeletal staff that maybe only has single person in the office at a given time, and they never return phone calls or emails making it difficult to find someone EVEN WHEN YOU ARE ATTEMPTING TO GIVE THEM MONEY. The maintenance staff is either incompetent or lack the proper tools/materials necessary to do a job - every single fix is a band-aid fix that lasts a month or two if you're lucky... or if you have an insect problem (ants, beatles, silverfish, etc.) they will just throw down a couple of glue traps and call it a job well done. And all for the 10% YOY increase in rent from the prior year. You're going to tour this place and you're going to meet someone nice, who will give you a tour of a gorgeous apartment, in an amazing area, for an expensive but reasonable price. Two months after you move in, that person you meet will be impossible to find and rude when you do, that apartment will be falling apart at the seams, and they'll be coming to you with a substantial rent hike a year out, banking on the fact that the hassle of moving will keep you there... so heed my advice and don't move-in in the first place.
Do NOT move here. It's very nice from the outside, but once you commit long-term lease (i.e. 12 or 14 month), you're stuck and everything starts going awry. There are of course some nice things about living here. I will list those first: 1.) The neighbors are respectful and quiet 2.) Everyone except one individual in the leasing office is very nice (said individual is always extremely rude and always gives much attitude) 3.) If you live in the main building (which we didn't) the front desk staff is really sweet and all the mail room staff is also very friendly 4.) The pool is nice (although it would be nice if it were open for more than three months) 5.) The shuttle service to the metro is very convenient The bad: 1.) We live in one of the smaller buildings that's not connected to the big building. There are two doors to get, but the first is always unlocked. The second door is SUPPOSED to be locked at all times, but often times is not. 2.) When we moved in I read on yelp about a break-in, and it's very clear from our front door that someone had tried to shimmy their way into our apartment as well. The signs of forced entry are obvious (we also noticed similar ones on a neighbor's door), which definitely does not make me feel safe. 3.) Recently, our ceiling started to crack and it's always really humid in the apartment. (Management had maintenance fix it; we just hope it doesn't happen again.) 4.) The first week we lived there while my husband was home, a stranger tried to unlock our door. My husband was startled because our door was clearly locked, and then the stranger just walked into our apartment, looked at my husband, and walked back out! I reported this to the leasing office in August when we first moved in, and they emailed me back and assured me this never happens and asked me for more information. I emailed them back with the information and never heard from them again. In February after we complained again, the leasing office finally got back to us. They said that they looked into it and that the man who walked into our apartment could not have been a member of their staff (which is dubious, but even if true, is problematic in that there's random people with keys to the apartments). They also said they have never had any break ins before which is a clear lie because of said dent which we luckily took a photo of, and someone on Yelp also wrote they had an issue with a break in. THEN they told me that they followed up with me via email about the intruder issue back in August. I looked through all of my emails and told them I never got a reply about this. Then the leasing office changed their stance and said that they CALLED us about the issue weeks later. We checked our call logs (thanks Sprint!) and there was no call made. Then they suggested that maybe we left our door unlocked and someone just "pushed" it open. We NEVER leave our door unlocked. We live in a small studio and pay over $1800 a month for this supposed "luxury residence." There is nothing luxurious about this studio. From the shimmied door, to the cracked ceiling, to the highly unsatisfactory way we were treated by the leasing manager, I don't think paying $1800 is worth this headache and hassle. If privacy, security, and getting your money's worth matters to you, we are sure you can find a better place to live.
Edited and updated review: I've tried very hard to be cordial and understanding to the issues with the management of this community. But after 8 months of living here and countless back-and-forths with management, I would NOT recommend living here. Management is unresponsive (although they always go out of their way to respond to google reviews - very interesting!) and uncooperative. Pros: Safe community, neighbors are generally quiet and respectful, dog friendly, lots of parking Cons: -Fitness center equipment always broken. I reported this more than 4 months ago and was told the gym is "being redone" under the new management, but NO changes have been made at all. It doesn't take months to replace equipment that is dangerous to use (weights not secured, treadmill speed increases but does not decrease) -Gate for restricted parking area is constantly broken and management leaves it fully open during the day so workmen (painters, electricians) can park there (there is AMPLE street parking and giant work vans prevent residents from parking in the spots that they paid for) - this means that your car + several building entrances are fully - and knowingly- left unsecured throughout the day. -CONSTANT loud & unneccesary maintenance of buildings - I have lived here for 8 months and there has not been ONE DAY where there have not been maintenance crews working on erroneous things (currently they are sawing down the paint on the stair railing outside the building - metal on metal- and they've been doing this for 6 hours a day for 2 weeks- just to...change the paint color of the railing? Absurd.) -Package room - NIGHTMARE! You will be told that having your packages accepted is an "amenity", but actually getting your package from the concierge is ridiculous - every.single. time. I have been told they "cannot find" my package or I need to "come back later" to get the package. Was told by management the last time they lost an expensive package and then were rude about it that they will soon be installing "package lockers" and "making things easier" - this was 5 months ago, no changes have been made at all. I have my packages sent to a friend - 45 minutes away - just to avoid their package room service - I refuse to lose more money and more packages just because Vaughn Place can't get it together. -Management inaccessible - if you call the community, you will rarely speak to someone actually in the community, you will be routed to their national call center and be told you will get a call back. IF you actually get in touch with someone from management, you will be gaslit: you will be asked "why this issue hasn't been reported before", you will be told "no one else has ever reported this issue", and you will be told that they need time to "follow up" - overall just really frustrating customer service from management. This part of the DC is absolutely beautiful, but Vaughn Place provides a truly terrible quality of life and resident experience. Move somewhere else.
** Updated just 1 day later!!!! (What a shocker) **: My AC has been broken for the past 30 hours, stuck at 82 degrees and NO ONE IS HELPING ME. I have called the front desk over 10 times, talked to FIVE different employees over a span of 15 HOURS and NO ONE CAN GET IN TOUCH WITH MAINTENANCE. IS THIS A FREAKING JOKE?! I put in 1 work order online that went unanswered for 5 hours, so I then proceeded to put 3 more in just in case they classify the importance of each request differently. 30 hours later, no response from anyone. 1) don't claim that the property has 24 maintenance because that's a darn LIE! One of the front desk people was SLURRING THEIR WORDS yesterday evening when I called-- sounded high and asked me the same question 3 times. So freaking incompetent. After my 9th call (just now) to the leasing office to see an update on where maintenance can POSSIBLY be, the front desk man GOT SNAPPY WITH ME, said "this could cost me my job but here you freaking go" AND HUNG UP. I'm SORRY SIR that I'm sitting in an 86* apartment and paying over $2500/month for this BS apartment with no AC while you're sitting doing NOTHING in the lobby with air conditioning. No one could get ahold of maintenance but when I called them myself someone answered???? (He gave me attitude too, for the record, and shut the phone quickly). Such a freaking joke. I'm stuck here for 17 more months and I can't even fathom what else will happen. So useless I can't even describe. -- Leasing office employees & management are the most useless I have ever come across in the entire DMV area. Before, during, and after moving in, none of my calls or emails were/are ever replied to or returned. I have visited the leasing office multiple times to get various issues resolved, most notably being inaccurate charges billed to my account or even putting my name on the wrong (someone else's) lease!! I was never given an overview of where to find the parking entrances, mailboxes, etc. when I moved in, and I was told to call and make an appointment to do so. When I asked for the leasing agent to just tell me where the mailbox is, she didn't even know what/where to tell me. New management is just as bad as the last one and they definitely don't care about their residents! The lack of knowledge can be overlooked, however, but what can't be overlooked is the lack of effort put in with the leasing office when it comes to returning phone calls and emails. Most emails I've sent to them have been important, but they always tell me their "swamped and to come back later when xyz employee is in the office to help me" when I've confronted them with the same issues verbally in the office. It seems like leasing office employees come and go as they please, and I've called multiple times with no answer when it's clearly working hours. It's going to be a long long looong lease term but hopefully it gets better!!!! I just try to interact as little as possible with the leasing office and management but when I do, it's important things that just don't get addressed!!
Management here ignores everything - 0/5 stars. I've moved out of a unit I am unfortunately still paying for due to health and mold concerns. The wall in my unit was rotting the entire time I lived there (still rotting currently), and my service requests were left pending for multiple months, only to be later canceled. I resubmitted, and all they managed to do was paint the wall. The water issue and mold problems still persist. I resubmitted again, and the requests got canceled. This apartment complex and leasing company will do anything to make a profit. I will update this review if I ever receive an email response from the management team. (Please no generic "we are so sorry" corporate/leasing responses to this review from a leasing team that does not even work on the property, thank you). (Update I have yet to receive a response from the management team)
They will be really nice to you during the showing process but once you move in they treat you with utter contempt if you ask for anything. The community manager "jay" in particular is a very unfriendly fellow who is fond of bad mouthing residents and airing their business in the common areas, which is kind of laughable as I believe he can probably only afford to live here as part of his employment but he makes lots of signs, avoids dealing with residents concerns, and sends lots of threatening emails so the corporation that owns the property probably likes him. The package room is nice, there looks to be a decent pool, and its a decent location so hopefully someone better suited to community management will be hired soon.
Beware of this place I was scammed out of my security deposit to hold the apartment for $1000 with a move in date of late July. I was in contact with Michaela Melendez (240) 220 - 0482. I was not able to move in and promised a refund, however every time I contacted her and the leasing office she had multiple excuses of either being on vacation or thinking that it already been taken care of. I was patient with her and all involved parties throughout this process even waited a week after she said she would return from vacation. When I tried to reach out again my number was blocked. I then asked close family and friends to reach out to her and her voice mailbox is full. It is now October and I still have not received a refund nor any contact from her or the leasing office.
This apartment complex is genuinely awful. Extremely overpriced, maintainence rarely replies, there is a rat and cockroach infestation you can hear the rats in the walls and on the ceiling at night. The management is very rude and useless. The front glass door is broken. The concierge is never around and the package system is genuinely the worst thing ever. It takes over a week from a package being delivered to it actually coming in your hand. The management excuse is that there is new concierge talent who can't handle the amount of packages, well then they should hire more. Save your 2000+ plus a month and pick a better apartment complex plenty in the area that are cheaper provide more amenities and actually value their tenets not just view them as walking $$$$
Not worth the money, constant water problems, never know if it will work or not. Storage was so bad my clothes not in a special bag all became all moldy and I Told Mgmt and they did nothing for a yr to fix it. Fire alarms constantly goes and no solutions provided for elder parent to evacuate. Treat renters crappy and constantly chance rules in favor of 1/2% that are owners. Let go of some of there own people and gave them ten days to move out. Parking now sucks because more people are coming to local food and retail spots. Gee now with no notice at all when I unfortunately ONLY renewed as I searched for house they have started charging for water, "trash and sewage. No notice just showed up on lease. Be very careful and read lease line by line. The method of billing, a mystery completely and affected by other lazy people that leave piggy messes around or by fools that leave water running and flood apart So, single source of recycling ends up as a total stinking mess. They have one small container for recycling and it is seemingly always full which means a mess like photo.
THE WORST MANAGEMENT !!!! STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE !! To bad this place as such a potential great LOCATION , Beautiful buidings....... They just need to clean this place out ! Hire some REAL professional for a start. Good luck if you still are moving there, you have been warn !!!!
I went here today looking to rent and possibly buy. Vaughan Place was recommended by a neighbor and Vaughan Place has intrigued me. Whether it is renting or buying, finding a nice home and community is one of the most important decisions one can make. I value where I invest my money especially since I have gone through many negative home experiences. I am glad to find reviews on Yelp. Some are positive yet some are also negative. I no longer have the interest in Vaughan Place that I did a few minutes ago. People don't deserve to live in uncleanliness and with poor management. I have had enough of that. Thank you to those who took the time to write reviews. I appreciate knowing the truth so I don't make a mistake by investing in Vaughan Place.
Not normally a review person, but I feel morally obligated to warn people about this den of thieves. Last October, employees erroneously served court summonses to SEVEN PEOPLE in just ONE MONTH for thousands in rent they didn't owe. They pushed me to take out a two-year lease, saying that it would be cheaper to do it that way and pay to break the lease than it would be to lease for a shorter time. Of course that wasn't true; I suppose it was partially my fault for buying into it. They really push you to buy a condo rather than renting, which is also a trap, because one entity owns a huge block of units and therefore has a monopoly over the HOA and can do essentially whatever it wants, including push you out of your home. Wanted to give them a second chance after a full employee turnover, but they clearly didn't deserve one. During the switch, the terms of our leases changed with no notice (advanced or even after-the-fact) and no option to break the lease without penalty. Their only communications come in the form of cryptic emails in the tone of grade schoolers attempting to sound more intelligent than they are by misusing mediocre vocabulary. Then, of course, tenants are responsible for information in said emails that was either misconstrued or simply factually incorrect. Important information is scattered throughout non-apologies for minor issues to avoid dealing with the other massive problems they won't address. It feels like this place is run by an unsupervised clique of middle-school 'mean girls'. The rental office is only open on weekdays and during business hours when people with day jobs are at work. You can also forget getting any kind of work done; I was promise they'd fix the cracked glass range, HOLES IN THE WALL THAT EXPOSE LIVE MAINS POWER, breakers that trip multiple times per washing machine cycle, and warped and unhinged doors BEFORE move-in. I have lived here for a year. None of that is fixed, because they arrange service appointments such that you'd have to take an entire weekday off work on incredibly short notice. Plus, the people responsible for maintenance do not speak a single word of English, and politics aside, this leads to misunderstandings with the only-English-speaking office staff. Parking is nightmarish, and you're not guaranteed a spot unless you pay over double the base rate of $75/mo. The gates to the lots don't work, and there was actually an instance in which an ambulance had to plow through a gate and cause incredible damage, because the emergency opening mechanism did not work, and there was no one at the allegedly 24-hour concierge to let them in. They hold your packages so that you can only get them if there happens to be someone in the mailroom, which does not follow any kind of regular schedule whatsoever. I've only ever seen one person working in the mailroom, and he is incredibly nice and helpful but grotesquely overworked. There is seldom actually someone at the front desk in the evening, which is advertised as a 24-hour service, which also means there is no security at night. Anyone who hands in any form of ID (including a non-government-issued student or work ID) as collateral is given the keys to any apartment they wish. The community advertises being completely non-smoking, but they do not enforce this rule at all. The units are also advertised as having fireplaces, but the gas is shut off and you're not allowed to use them. To pay your rent, you're required to either (a) leave a cheque (with no envelope allowed) in an unsecured slot leading to a cardboard box in the oft-unguarded main lobby (that's usually overflowing with other people's cheques) or (b) pay an extra service fee to pay your rent online. Tenants are left to jump through all kinds of unnecessary bureaucratic hoops for things like parking access, pool passes, mandatory routine maintenance, etc. I tried to give this place a chance, because the location is beautiful, and the apartment itself is conceptually great. Sadly, the freshly-painted fountains and beautiful landscaping are just a facade.
When I first moved in, I noticed ants in the kitchen and closet areas and asked them to send the exterminator. He sprayed almost all the walls of the apartment, including behind the stove, but the ants still came back, one by one. I found a couple on the windowsills (two of which are sealed shut, I found out why later) and still by the closet and around the "bedroom" nook of the studio. I also was seeing centipedes -- 4 in two weeks, including one of the giant ones you never hope comes into your house. So I requested that the exterminator come out again. He did and used different chemicals for the ants than the first guy, which struck me as odd for employees of the same company. Two days later, a swarm of ants appeared on the windowsill next to my bed -- there must have been 50 of them (the one window that wasn't sealed shut). That was the last straw for me, and called the Manager of Capital Properties, who said she would "give me a deal" if I broke my lease, only charging me for half of one month's rent, not whole. She took 4 days to get back to me, and while on the phone, tried to blame me for the bug problem, saying that maybe I brought them in with me. She also said that this "was not a big problem," to which I responded, "what is your idea of a big problem?" I have been spraying every inch of my apartment with Raid and have not had the exterminator come back. Additionally, in the first month of living here, there was a break-in. One resident in my building (which is one of the outlying buildings, not the tower) left their door unlocked and someone came in and stole electronics. My problems with this are: they claim that the building is safe, it's buried in the complex and it has cameras at every entrance and all over the gym. The possibilities are: someone living in my building is a thief; someone got in and was trolling the hallways looking for unlocked doors; or the maintenance guys saw them leave and took advantage. No matter, it's incredibly unsettling for all of this to have taken place in a "luxury" complex. I've lived in two luxury complexes and NEVER experienced the things I experienced here. I've never even experienced these things at any place I've lived before, luxury or not. If I'm going to be paying this much money, I'm not going to waste it here. (Written in September of 2011)
Vaughan Place switched management companies several months ago. Now tenants have to contend with rude staff, concierge taking personal calls, and missing packages. Don't expect service with a smile... saccharine with a hint of sarcasm at best... but often just barely masked contempt (maybe they think we are too stupid to pick up on it as long as they smile?). They also continue to hike on tenants and seem unable to resolve continuing ant problems.
No action taking on smoking so chainsmokers are very welcome.
If all the other reviews about how this place is a shit hole does not deter you from checking this place out, I'm sure an appointment with their lovely leasing manager, Mona, will. This lady clearly does not care about the current tenants nor does she care about winning over any prospective ones. Decided to change up the building rules on a whim as we were in the lobby to be let in into my boyfriends place because she clearly did not approve of how we looked. Nasty/unfriendly woman. Avoid this place.
It looks like Vaughan Place management is more responsive to poor reviews on sites like Yelp than they are to calls from residents, so giving it a shot here. When everything is working, this is a nice place to live. God help you if you need any kind of maintenance. Repair and maintenance requests often take 7 to 10 days to process and complete. We've had situations where maintenance has said they've completed repairs, but we'd been home all day and knew that wasn't true. Unfortunately, and despite our best efforts, the unit has needed a lot of repairs. We're repeatedly told someone will call us "right back" with an update or that repairs will begin "tomorrow." It's been the better part of two weeks.
Spend your money somewhere else. I lived at Vaughan Place for two years and was subject to the management change others have mentioned. When it came time to renew my lease under the new management, I had to approach them. To my surprise, they raised my rent 25% with no warning. I did not have enough time to look for a different place to live, so had to accept the 25% rent increase. By raising my rent on such short notice, they also violated the terms of my first lease. The massive, surprise rent increase was the biggest issue I had here, but there were many others. The fire alarms go off roughly once a month, often around 2am. Management never offered explanation or apologized for these. The one time that there actually was a fire in the building (the entire stairwell and hallways smelled like smoke), an explanation of the cause was never given. The building has rats. I found two inside, one in the lobby and one on the fifth floor hallway. At one point, the lobby smelled strongly of natural gas for several days. An explanation was never offered as to why. The fifth floor also routinely smelled of gas. Despite investigations, it was never determined where the smell came from (no natural gas appliances in the building). At least one of three elevators in the tower consistently did not work from the time the new management took over. This created many delays in entering and leaving the building. Sometimes, all three elevators would be out of service with no communication from management. This created significant issues for residents with limited mobility. My apartment routinely smelled like cigarette smoke, since many units in the building are owned, not rented. Enforcement of the non-smoking policy was clearly not strong enough. Although the leasing office staff were very nice while I lived there, the second I moved out, communication ended. I had to end my lease early due to accepting a job out of state, but I followed all termination guidelines, including a very hefty fine. I moved out December 18, but my apartment was not listed as available until late January (supposedly this was due to renovations, which take about 1 week - I watched many apartments on my hallway get renovated). The termination fee I was originally charged was about $2000 higher than what it should have been. No one at Vaughan Place answered my calls or emails regarding this. I finally received a reply to an email after quoting DC housing law. Take it as a sign that many residences have been on the market for 4+ months. If you want to spend $2500 on a one bedroom, live at the brand new construction one block away. Do not live here.
I live in the Gardens, AKA the low rise apartment homes. While my unit is gorgeously appointed with marble countertops and hardwood floors, I have had an ONGOING problem with Oriental roaches (waterbugs). Vaughan Place had been useless to rectify the situation. Despite the gorgeous aesthetics of my unit, at the end of my lease term I will be moving elsewhere. I refuse to pay sky-high rent and deal with roaches any longer than I have to. Not happening!
Do not move into this property! My husband and I lived there for over a year and it was absolutely horrible. We paid all of our rent/utilities on time!! Then, when moving out, we could never get anyone in the management (Michelle Swenson) office on the phone. They ended up telling us the wrong amount of prorated rent to pay. Which we paid. And then the next property manager (KIM HUNTER!) reached out to us (MONTHS after we moved out) to pay a different amount. We tried multiple times to call/email and she ignored us and I think even blocked my email address, THEN REPORTED US TO A CREDITOR. I don't think Kim Hunter realizes how big of a deal that is for people trying to buy homes and pay rent during hard times like Covid. A hit to your credit is a BIG deal. The fact she wouldn't return multiple calls and emails is awful. I have in writing (which I sent to her) the amount Michelle Swenson said to pay. Additionally, these are all the other things that went wrong. 1. My husbands mountain bike was stolen out of a LOCKED bike room, when asked how this happened, couldn't get an answer and they never reimbursed us. 2. In general, you can never get anyone on the phone, no one from their leasing or management office is EVER there or EVER works. 3. Packages are frequently lost/stolen. 4. There were cockroaches and other bugs constantly in the apartment and no one to speak to to come spray. 5. The gym is DISGUSTING and during Covid there were never any wipes and people unmasked. Zero enforcement of Covid rules. Moving to this place was a nightmare, I assure you, it is not worth the seemingly cheaper rent.
Please fix the elevator #2 in the tower! It was my second locked in the elevator. This time I was trapped in the elevator for over 30mins in the summer time with NO AC inside, before I was finally rescued!
I've never seen a leasing office like this one -- Vaughn Place's values and priorities are wrong -- highlighted by Jennifer Webb, who I had a seriously discomforting encounter with. I had come to the property to work for a real estate agent who needed photos -- Jennifer treated me like somebody who didn't belong there. There was a level of passive output that did not sit well with me. This was an awful experience -- every day I drive by Vaughn Place and think of how poor Jeniffer and her fellow staffers treat people.
management is poor .. except for Adolfo.. Since we've been here no one has come to check our vents, my windows are stiff, I can't use my dish washer because it was broken from the day i moved in... the old washing machine makes an extremely loud noise which the Manager herself said I should be able to manage.. its crazy...
I've lived in the Vaughan Place since April 2014 and I have to say it has been very much a mixed bag. I manage apartments and commercial buildings for a private equity real estate company so I understand first hand that a complex of 575 apartment units will have its challenges here and there. My experience recently has been challenged. First off the positives: 1. Location, 2. Large apartments for the market, 3. Pool/Gym, 4. Cheap parking, 5. Cathedral Commons Now the challenges... the first level townhome apartments tend to have bug issues given their front and rear entrances. Management does what they can to bait the grounds but it only helps so much. We also had a serious rat issue (outside only) in September/October 2014 which was addressed by Management but resulted in dead rats on the common grounds. All multifamily buildings have this problem but given my unit's proximity to the dumpsters it was practically pronounced. The biggest issue with this complex is some units are individually owned condo's vs. rental apartments which means the Vaughan Place Property Management really cannot control the actions of these individuals. If you get stuck with a bad actor neighbor it can be a nightmare. Maintenance requests can also be very slow, for example it recently took 7+ days to have my dishwasher fixed - that is a LONG time for the Class A apartment industry. Most things are addressed quickly but sometimes things fall through the cracks.
Quick update-- you'll see that Nichole commented below to promise a member of the team would follow up. As I said in the review, these comments are the norm, but rest assured no one ever contacted me about this review. Management posts those comments solely to dupe prospective tenants into thinking they take these reviews seriously. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ My fiance and I have lived in one of the townhouse units since June 2019 and it's been a challenging experience to say the least. Sadly, we have about a year left on the two-year lease we were stupid enough to fall for. First off-- the pros. We have a two-level unit with both a full and half bath, and for what we pay it's a really nice amount of space. Two-level apartment units are almost impossible to find in DC, and having a half-bath is incredibly helpful. We also have a beautiful bay window, and I think the kitchen is well sized for two people. The gym and pool are also clean, spacious and well-maintained. Unit aside, this is far and away the most poorly-managed establishment of any kind I have ever encountered. If you live in the townhouses, you have to go to the main tower to receive packages. This is totally fine with Aaron is working, but if he's off or on a break you absolutely, under no circumstances will not be able to collect your mail. There have been times I have waited for 30+ minutes as front desk staff tried to find packages for me, and then returned later on only to have Aaron locate the parcel in a minute or less. This is just a waste of everyone's time, and the front desk staff needs to be trained to perform this most rudimentary of tasks. Maintenance is also a complete and utter joke. We've had a laundry list of issues since moving in-- our washer and dryer have both broken, our downstairs toilet flooded, our sink flooded, our AC malfunctioned (for THIRTEEN days in JUNE), filters have needed replacement, and we've had persistent issues with ants and roaches-- and none have been resolved in any less than 5 days. The online portal where residents submit maintenance requests is unreliable at best, and on several instances we've had worked marked as being "completed" that never happened... leading to days of runaround with management to get the issues resolved. We've also received calls from staff asking when they can come to perform maintenance that was completed weeks, or even months, earlier. [All that said, it's worth noting that AJ in maintenance is really nice and does his best to help. I think he's just limited in what he can do because of his bosses. And the actual techs who come to help fix things are very professional and kind!] The walls in the townhouses are also very thin, so if you're unlucky enough to have inconsiderate neighbors it can be a living nightmare. Every tenant in our townhouse has called the front desk to report a particular couple who are disruptive to everyone else in the building and nothing has ever been done about it. It's really luck of the draw, but unfortunately we deal with a lot of marijuana smoke, vacuuming at 2 a.m. and two really loud, barky dogs. If you look up Vaughan Place on any review platform (here, Google, Apartments.com, etc.) you'll see "replies" from building management. The "number" they ask reviewers to call is just the front desk of the main building. The front desk staff won't connect you to management for ANY reason, so these comments are total farces meant to make the building look better to prospective residents. Most, frankly, are just copied-and-pasted. I saw so many of these reviews before moving here, and I fell for the "concerned management" act I thought I saw demonstrated through the comments asking reviewers for follow up. Please, save yourself an enormous headache and don't fall for it. There are so many great apartment complexes available in this same area that are in the same price range and actually offer genuine, caring and responsible management. And to Nichole, who I am sure will "respond" to this asking me to follow up with her, please feel free to contact me directly through one of the numerous emails I have sent you. I would love nothing more than to connect with you directly.
I moved in this place November 2023 and I'm going to tell you why your money will go longer elsewhere. HORRIBLE LEASING EXPERIENCE: I initially had an issue with this place during move in because they gave me the wrong apartment, then forced me to keep it and told me I can "transfer whenever I want." The leasing consultant initially made the error, then the Property Manager Brian told me he was correcting the error when in fact he gave me the wrong apartment. When I flagged this for them and told them I don't want the unit, I had already signed the lease. They asked that I give them the weekend to work out a solution and to work with the "other supposed tenant" who rented the apartment I wanted. However, THERE WAS NO OTHER TENANT AND THE APARTMENT I WANTED REMAINED VACANT FOR MONTHS. They are liars and don't do good business period. LACK OF SECURITY/SAFETY. As you know, we are in the District of Columbia. To keep it short and sweet, the property assumes the location will give them a "pass" on crime. There is no way to even catch these people committing crime because THERE IS A LACK OF SECURITY CAMERAS THROUGHOUT THE PROPERTY. And sad to say, it will take something horrible happening for them to put them in place. My car was hit in the parking lot and when I asked them if there was security camera footage I could send my insurance they informed me the parking lot has no cameras. The parking lot....in DC....where car theft is rampant....has no cameras. Just let that sink in. people have gotten their vehicles stolen and their tires stolen off of their cars. BUGS. This place has bugs everywhere period. If you walk anywhere at night, you will see a plethora of roaches, water bugs, and for a better way of putting it HUGE BLACK/BROWN BUGS scatter everywhere outside all night and it is disgusting. Literally will make your skin crawl. If you have a dog and walk them 3 times a day, you will get at least 5-10 mosquitos bites before making it back to your apartment. This place needs to get mosquito treatment that I've experienced at other complexes as it takes a lot of the joy out of walking your dogs. RENOVATIONS. They are beautiful in the photos online but a lot of the work is shotty up-close. STAFF. The leasing consultant who initially screwed up my move in is gone. The leasing manager is still here. And Sonia Anzar, the Regional Property Manager, is useless and aided in the initial fraud of a lease they forced me to honor and never did a single thing to mitigate the mistake her staff made. The only competent person in that office is Alexis Frederick. MAINTENANCE/GOOGLE REVIEWS. Don't let these five star reviews fool you. After you get maintenance done, they ask you to review the tech but it directs you to the google reviews LOL. Its literally a ploy to get their google review up. As far as the maintenance, to this point, they haven't given me any issues except for not being able to fix the door of my building for days on end but that goes back to the lack of security/safety. I literally only moved here because of the closet space and the location proximity to my job. But this place affects my day-to-day joy. I hate it here and can't wait to move.
Very rude leasing staff. Keshia in particular. Edited to add...I've actually called the number below and that's where your associate answered and was rude. No point continuing that conversation. I asked to speak to someone else and there were no other options. If you'd like to work on customer service and help folks looking for apartments you are going to need to work with your staff on how to deal with folks who are stressed apt hunters and may not know the idiosyncrasies of your system. There are plenty of other buildings who are much more polite, helpful and understand that folks new to the area or looking may not know exactly how each building works.
I have been very displeased by my experience at Vaughn Place. A few highlights from the last few months: - 20% rent increase -Leaking roof that took over a month to address - Loss of multiple packages - Elimination of the metro shuttle service - Poor insulation that causes different areas of the apartment to have extreme changes in heating -No notice of construction activity, making it consistently challenging to work from home In general I've had positive experiences with the maintenance staff, so giving an extra star for that.
Not a bad place to live but they charge WAY too much in rent, only open the pool like 3 months of the year, and the leasing office will never answer the phone or get back to you. I'm moving out and beware if you move into my unit (3615 #207) the dog next door will bark all through the day and night. It is very loud to the point people on calls with me point it out. I have told the leasing office at least 6 times but like always, they do nothing.
The combination of paper-thin walls and large numbers of younger residents (who, if they are not college students, act like college students) is not a good one for noise levels. While the units themselves are nice, the noise detracts from the enjoyment you might actually get out of them. Even when the neighbors aren't constant partyers, ordinary conversations are quite audible from unit to unit. Also, as other reviewers have noted, there are serious ant problems in some of the smaller buildings. Not a luxury experience for a working adult.
Broke a shower curtain hook. Didn't even tell me.
Overall it was a quiet nice place to stay and the community is nice.. when I first moved in I've noticed some roaches and I should've taken that as a red flag.. now matter how clean you are, there will always be roaches. My front door had a small crack underneath so they would always come from there. The leasing office NEVER answers there phone. I don't understand why they even have a phone line because they never use it. Maintenance would enter my home with late notice/ no notice without me home and that would make me very uncomfortable sometimes..I work long hours and one day I came home to a random tape measure sitting on my dresser. Like why were you in my room??? Still makes me feel icky to this day.
I've lived at the Vaughn Place (low-rise) for about a year now. Here's my honest oppinion: Pros: - gorgeous apartments - modern appliances - community vibe - great location - nice pool - friendly staff Cons: - the walls are PAPER thin! I mean I can literally hear my next door neighbor laugh and the little dog barking across the hall from me. I didn't even know walls were even made this thin! - I had a pretty big ant problem! The exterminator came and sprayed but the ants never went away. It took me spraying constantlyyyyy to finally be 'ant free.' I have a funny feeling once the weather gets warmer, the little critters will be back.... - Street parking can be a HUGE pain in the butt if you choose not to pay the extra $$ for a parking spot. Many of nights i spend a good 15-20 mins looking for parking. I do enjoy living here but the paper thin walls are a HUGE turnoff for me. Who wants to hear their neighbors conversation or the dog barking across the hall? I actually think my college dorm room had thicker walls then this place. Ugh... I love everything else but hearing every little detail. They shouldn't be charging the amount they do for rent when the walls are as thin as they are ... I was contemplating giving 2 stars because of the sound situation but I decided on 3 because the apartments ARE really nice!
Sorry to hear about Jay leaving the place as a community manager. Contrary to what others say, he was competent and responsive as Michelle Swenson. However, Mikaela is as bad as her predecessor Nicole.
I currently live here and yes we are in the pandemic, but in less than 6 months living here: broken water heater (AJ fixed this - if he had the power, everything would be instantly fixed), broken microwave and broken A/C unit. Our apartment is 80s inside at all times and despite emailing and calling management, no response. So we are paying full rent for a sweaty apartment with no replies to our emails or our calls. Otherwise we love it here. Wish everything went smoother.
